REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Building Principal, District EL Director Position Summary: Ann Arbor Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified teacher to provide English Language Arts instruction to high school students while also supporting English Learner (EL) students within the ELA curriculum. The ELA/EL teacher will teach core English Language Arts classes and collaborate with other educators to ensure EL students receive content instruction that is accessible to their language proficiency level. The teacher will integrate ESL strategies and sheltered instruction techniques into ELA lessons, providing differentiated support that helps EL students access grade-level content while developing their English language skills. This dual role requires expertise in both the English Language Arts curriculum and English language development methodologies to ensure all students achieve academic success.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in education or higher Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsements in ESL (NS) or Bilingual Education (YT) (K-12 or 6-12) and ENGLISH (BA) 6-12 SIOP Training Preferred Previous experience working with multilingual learners and their families Experience working with newcomers and recently arrived students Knowledge of secondary student expectations, including academic, social, emotional, and behavioral milestones REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core ELA Teaching Responsibilities: Deliver comprehensive English Language Arts instruction aligned with district curriculum and state standards for high school students Establish high levels of student engagement and interaction that builds on all students' prior knowledge, with particular attention to multilingual learners Use active learning strategies, visual displays, and manipulatives to scaffold students' understanding of literary concepts, writing processes, and language skills Focus on critical thinking, textual analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and clear communication across speaking, listening, reading, and writing Facilitate meaningful classroom discourse through which students construct understanding of complex texts and develop academic language Evaluate students' academic and social growth, maintain accurate records, and prepare progress reports EL Support and Integration: Integrate ESL strategies and sheltered instruction techniques within ELA lessons to support English Learners Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to provide accommodations for instruction and assessment, making ELA content accessible to ELs Provide targeted vocabulary instruction and English language development within the ELA curriculum Support EL students' development of academic language skills specific to English Language Arts Provide cultural and linguistic insights about language minority students to support inclusive classroom environments Professional Collaboration and Data Analysis: Demonstrate skillfulness in collecting and analyzing district data for program monitoring and student progress Show success working with underachieving students and implementing strategies to close achievement gaps Apply targeted instructional moves that demonstrate effective teaching practices in ELA instruction for diverse learners Use professional language that supports students in developing self-control, building classroom community, and gaining academic skills EL Program Support: Assist in identifying potential ELs and support appropriate class placement/scheduling using various measures Maintain accurate EL records including HLS, PNL, and WIDA Screener documentation Advocate for multilingual students and their families Participate in professional development and facilitate building-level training in English language acquisition best practices Serve on Achievement Team Meetings, IEPs, or METs where ELs are involved Professional Skills: Demonstrate outstanding personal and interpersonal communication skills Exhibit excellent organizational skills and sensitivity to developmental stages and well-being of all students, particularly ELs Incorporate current technology into ELA curriculum with specific attention to supporting EL students Facilitate group discussions, analyze educational situations, and create effective action plans Adapt to changing work priorities and maintain flexibility in diverse working conditions Other duties as assigned
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations Communicate effectively and present information both in oral and in written form
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
