Summary
The Teacher will provide a quality, Christian preschool education to the children in his/her care. The Teacher will carry out the stated purpose of the preschool by directly sharing God’s Word with the children in educational and recreational activities. The Teacher is responsible to the Director/Head Teacher and to the Preschool Board of Directors. The Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing age appropriate curriculum and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Teachers must understand children's cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in order to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Teacher must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults in order to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide teacher assistants, and resolve parental concerns.
Duties
- Plan and implement an Orientation process for new families registering in your classroom.
- Guide Teacher Assistants and any volunteers assigned to your classroom, always treating each person with respect and dignity, and provide input for said employees evaluations,
- Assist the Director in ordering, acquiring, and managing supplies and equipment for your classroom,
- Assist the Director in the publication of a school newsletter for families,
- Structure the routine for the class of children you have been assigned, in accordance with the purpose of the preschool, and along with the chosen Preschool curriculum,
- Keep a written plan of class activities, write parent memos on classroom activities, make a monthly calendar of events for parents, and in the event of your absence, provide written guidelines for a Substitute Teacher (Please copy the Director on all parent communications and sub plans).
- Establish and maintain an appropriate classroom and recreational environment for the young children entrusted to your care,
- Evaluate the students in your class in relation to preschool progress, abilities, and needs. Communicate such evaluation and information through formal, scheduled conferences, and informal meetings (if the need arises) with parents. Use evaluative documents that align with the Connecticut Early Learning Developmental Standards and file copies with the student’s records by the end of the school year. These documents need to be reviewed by the Director before sharing with parents,
- Use classroom management skills to establish and maintain firm guidelines for appropriate classroom behavior while following the Preschool’s Christian disciplinary policy and reporting any ongoing behavior problems to the Director,
- Use management skills to establish routine duties for the aides working in your classroom, and communicate specific goals and responsibilities for each day’s curricular activities,
- Be aware of and follow/enforce all emergency and other stated policies,
- Be responsible for the order and general cleanliness of your assigned classroom, including assigning end of the day classroom and bathroom cleaning.
- Assist with clerical duties,
- Assist in the planning of and attend all preschool related functions, and scheduled school-wide Staff Meetings, including public relations events,
- Schedule regular team meetings for the staff working in your classroom,
- Attend conferences, workshops, and other professional growth experiences, as the state requires.
Requirements
- Be Christian, by faith affirmation and as demonstrated by example for the parents and students. Non-Lutherans will be required to attend an Adult Information class to review Lutheran practices.
- Hold a degree, preferably in Early Childhood Education and/or Education,
- 2-3 years of teaching experience,
- Current knowledge of child development and how children learn,
- Maintain confidentiality,
- Ability to relate well to young children and adults,
- Possess good communication skills,
- Be able to work cooperatively with parents, staff, volunteers, and the Preschool Board, and
- Be organized, creative, dependable,and flexible.
