POSITION TITLE: VISION TEACHER (ITINERANT)  REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL OVERTIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 710 JOB SUMMARY: Performs difficult professional work preparing and providing therapeutic intervention to students with visual impairments in order to eliminate or reduce problems that interfere with their students' ability to derive full benefit from the educational program. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Teach and train blind and/or visually impaired students to achieve maximum potential; Assess and evaluate the needs of students (blind, visually impaired; low vision); Plan and implement instruction based on the individual needs and abilities of students; Develops Individualized Educational Programs and lesson plans; Select and requisition appropriate books and instructional materials and equipment; Provide positive role model to students, teachers and community Evaluates students' progress, maintains appropriate records and files, writes evaluation reports; Be competent in the use of and teaching of Braille/Keyboarding; Be knowledgeable of assistive technology designed for use with blind/visually impaired students; Teach Adaptive Technology for Daily Living; Be able to investigate and/or identify the Orientation & Mobility needs of student. Conduct and/or participate in meetings/conferences necessary to comply with local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations; Maintains professional competence; Performs related tasks as required. JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Thorough knowledge of special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of blind and/or visually impaired students; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Moderate lifting and carrying required, work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; good visual acuity is preferred for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards. Regular district-wide travel to multiple locations as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Visual Impairment. Eligible for or in possession of an appropriate Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Visually Impaired. A candidate with Dual endorsement in Visual Impairment and Orientation & Mobility would be given highest consideration.
