ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach four sections of middle school English classes
Support students with their learning and growth in the classroom as well as in forums outside of the classroom, like office hours as well as grade level team meetings
Create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom environment through regular class meetings, supportive exchanges with students, and clear expectations for classroom behavior
Coordinate and implement, at the classroom level, appropriate student assessments and utilize assessment results to enhance student learning, including differentiated instruction
Collaborate with department members in designing and implementing curriculum that aligns with the school mission and departmental aims, including preparing students for high school English requirements
Communicate in a clear and timely fashion with all community members
Cooperatively work and communicate effectively with parents/guardians in conferences, written reports, and with informal interactions
Support and follow the Faculty Handbook for Policies and Procedure and MS Professional Expectations
Be a positive and contributing member of the professional community
Serve as an active member of a grade level team, including participating on class trips or events
Develop, plan, and lead or co-lead experiential learning activities with a group of students
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties as assigned by Middle School Head
SCOPE OF WORK
Though the work is performed largely independently, ongoing collaboration is expected with colleagues across the school. Collaboration with grade level teams, committees as assigned, and the Middle School Head are also expected.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE BA or BS in English, education, or related field required
MA, MS, or MAT in English or related field and/or related experience preferred
Demonstrated experience with adolescents is required
At least two years of English teaching experience preferable
Experience in curriculum development and Understanding by Design instructional planning is a plus
Proficient in the use of internet, e-mail, and other appropriate technology applications
Understanding and experience with student-centered teaching, project-based learning, and performance-based assessment is preferable
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS Interactions occur most routinely with students in the classroom and during other activities
Many informal interactions with students for whom the teacher has no direct supervision or responsibility happen regularly
Daily contact ranges from direct teaching of curriculum to informal exchanges of a personal or social nature
Regular contact with colleagues, particularly those working in the same grade level, discipline or on a joint project is expected
Frequent contact with parents either for scheduled conferences or casual conversation is a community norm
Responsible and active collaboration with colleagues, in all divisions, is expected
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The requirements listed below are representative of physical requirements and may not be all-encompassing. Incumbents must be able to perform job duties with or without accommodations. Work is primarily performed in a classroom setting and includes occasional work leading students off campus activities, sometimes outside. Occasional overnight student trips are required.
Frequently remains in a stationary position for lesson preparation, report writing, and collaborative meetings for a moderate amount of time
Requires mobility to traverse campus to accompany and assure the safety of students
This may include moving up and down stairs or hill between facilities multiple times throughout the workday
Occasional bending, squatting, stooping and kneeling
Occasionally up 20 pounds
Periodic trips off-campus for retreats, professional development and to accompany students
SCHEDULE
This position is expected to begin in August 2025 and continue through October 2025, with the possibility of extension depending on leave coverage needs.
Teachers are expected to be on campus from at least 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and to participate in school-related functions as assigned. Full-time faculty members are also expected to attend retreats, conferences, and workshops, and to accompany students on experiential learning activities throughout the year.
