GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The elementary teacher helps students learn subject matter and skills which will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible citizens. The teacher is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and Virginia Standards of Learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
To perform this job successfully, the teacher must be able to perform each essential duty proficiently:

Demonstrates mastery of knowledge and skills associated with the content areas of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies;
Plans and delivers daily instruction and activities that result in student mastery and application of knowledge and skills using the school division's curriculum to assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisors;
Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs;
Develops formative and summative assessments of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement;
Develops and maintains a favorable psychological and physical environment that is conducive to effective learning;
Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of behavior in accordance with division guidelines regarding student behavior management.
Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
Participates in division and school-based in-service training, faculty and department meetings;
Collaborates with other faculty and staff in planning and delivering instruction to students;
Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the students' homes and the school;
Communicates regularly with parents and guardians;
Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others;
Demonstrates commitment to improving professional knowledge, skills, and abilities;
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
Supervises students during instructional and non-instructional time in and outside of the classroom (before school, after school, school activities, emergency drills, etc.);
Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations, and guidelines related to public schools;
Performs other duties as assigned by the administration and in accordance with School Board's policies and school division practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The successful teacher regularly demonstrates:
Comprehensive knowledge of: current best practices, techniques, and methodologies of instruction; the principles of educational assessments and principles and methods of differentiated instruction; effective means of supervision and instruction as applied to the work of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with special needs; the principles and methods of educational research;
Skills that include: excellent oral and written communication and effective use of technological instructional and communication tools;
Ability to: apply current best practices of education to students functioning at the elementary level; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children with a variety of learning needs, maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate is required to hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and must meet the eligibility requirements for a Virginia Department of Education license in the assigned grade level. It is preferred that the candidate hold a Master's Degree from accredited institution and demonstrated successful teaching experience.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
Teacher must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact; physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of instructional and office equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and audio visual devices. The teacher's work is typically performed in a school setting including a classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be required. Occasional movement of students by wheel chairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
