Special Education Specials Teacher

SUMMARY: The Specials Teacher is responsible for providing students with structured programming, teaching leisure skills in the day-school environment. This position will introduce students to a variety of skills, including social interaction, coping skills, life skills, physical activity, and leisure skills. Structured activities will include opportunities for imagination, rational thinking, performance, presentation, and the pursuit of a hobby. The Specials Teacher will work with classroom teachers, therapists, and program staff to integrate themes into a cohesive learning experience across all environments. This position may need to substitute in classrooms for Special Education Teachers.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in special education or a related field
  • A valid teaching license from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is preferred. Ability to obtain a Special Education License within 3 years.
  • Must possess intermediate computer skills to learn and operate software programs.
  • Ability to lead, take charge, problem solve, and give direction.
  • Ability to take on responsibilities and new challenges.
  • Ability to successfully meet the qualifications to become a Chileda Approved Driver.

GENERAL HOURS OF DUTY: Generally 8 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional or flexible hours or days of work may be required. This is an exempt, benefited position averaging a minimum of 40 hours of work per week.

REPORTS TO: Education Manager

JOB DUTIES:

  • Create a positive classroom environment that applies principles of special education in creative ways to enhance personal outcomes for students.
  • Create lessons for students in all classrooms on a rotating schedule that includes teaching functional skills, leisure skills, and social skills. Provide vocational and transitional learning opportunities to all students based on their individual needs and strengths.
  • Conduct transitional/vocational assessments for students aged 14 and up prior to their annual meeting.
  • Include students in assessments and transition plan development and implementation, as they are able.
  • Develop and implement goals based on assessments, observations, and students' individual strengths and preferences.
  • Develop and implement opportunities within Chileda to prepare students for employment and volunteer work in the community, including providing volunteer and job opportunities.
  • Teach Human Growth and Relationship class for all students.
  • Teach career exploration and job readiness classes.
