Your Role as a Special Education Teacher

  • Facilitate Student Counseling & Skill Development – Provide counseling for individuals and groups of students addressing educational and/or therapeutic challenges; support students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and setting appropriate educational and occupational goals.

  • Collaborate on Individualized Learning Plans – Prepare and maintain IEP forms; evaluate student progress through work output, tests, observations, and reports; determine goals, objectives, and directions in coordination with staff.

  • Engage School & Family Networks – Maintain ongoing communication with parents and coordinate with staff to align on student goals and objectives.

  • Monitor Academic Progress – Evaluate student work and test results to track progress; recommend placements and instructional strategies based on observations and data.

  • Coordinate with School Leadership – Work with the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and other staff members to ensure curriculum implementation matches New York Curriculum Frameworks.

  • Develop Therapeutic & Academic Curricula – Plan curriculum, lessons, and special education programs using tailored teaching methods.

  • Maintain Classroom Environment – Oversee the physical environment of the classroom to ensure it supports learning and student well-being.

  • Support Admissions Outreach – Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of applicants in the school’s instructional program.

  • Implement Positive Behavior Supports – Provide guidance that promotes goal setting, perseverance, and positive student behavior.

  • Participate in Team Collaboration – Attend meetings, coordinate goals and objectives, and complete required documentation including report cards, reading records, and observation forms.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • NY State Teaching Certification
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
