Program: The Connections Program provides classroom-based instruction for students on the autism spectrum or those with similar profiles who require communication development and structured teaching to advance their communication, social, academic, and functional skills. Serving students from early childhood through junior high school, the program is designed to foster independence, enhance communication, promote a positive self-image, and encourage meaningful social relationships. It creates a best-practice learning environment where academic, therapeutic, and behavioral supports are seamlessly integrated. Each student's program is individualized and guided by goals outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Daily instruction is structured into academic and therapeutic sessions tailored to each student's needs, with community integration embedded into the curriculum to promote real-world learning and social engagement.
Qualifications: Illinois Professional Educator License with Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBSI) Comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and skill in content area/assignment Minimum 2 years of successful teaching experience preferred or relevant coursework within the last 3 years Knowledge and experience with Google suite Excellent communication skills
Responsibilities: Design, supervise, and implement students' IEP plans Plan and implement academic instruction for students who exhibit communication, social, and behavioral challenges using evidence-based methods (i.e., Direct Instruction), assistive technology, and modified curriculum materials (i.e., Teachtown, SRA, PEAK, SCERTS) as well as general education curriculum Knowledgeable of various augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices Create and coordinate student schedules with related services and general education teacher Collect and analyze student data and monitor student progress Develop strategies for monitoring and analyzing challenging behavior and its communicative intent Develop and implement behavioral plans designed to reduce disruptive classroom behavior Effectively work with a large team of professionals to coordinate services Participate in professional development training that focuses on working with students with ASD Implement the Structured Teaching Method for students with ASD Participate in Crisis Intervention Training (CPI) and use CPI training and an understanding of the function of behavior to prevent behavior and intervene safely and effectively, including restraint when part of a written plan Provide structure, ongoing training, coaching, and support to professionals Create an environment that encourages social interaction between children with varying abilities and skill levels Ongoing collaboration with related service providers regarding scheduling and implementation strategies within the classroom Timely and ongoing communication/collaboration with parents
