Position

Position: Special Education Teacher Location: Pike Road Schools Reports To: Principal FLSA Status: Exempt Terms: 187-day position paid following the board-approved salary schedule

Qualifications: State of Alabama Professional Educator Certificate and Highly Qualified in area of instructional responsibility

Reports To: School and System Leadership

Job Goal: Create a culture of intellectual curiosity where all students have ownership over their learning and are inspired to think, innovate, and create.

Performance Responsibilities:

Teacher as Learner:

  1. Possess current content knowledgeable in the area of instructional responsibility.
  2. Continue as a life-long learner.
  3. Participate in professional learning activities.
  4. Collaborate with colleagues to accomplish the desired learning outcomes and IEP goals.
  5. Learn and utilize new strategies and technologies to engage students in challenging, authentic, and meaningful learning experiences.
  6. Model lifelong learning and curiosity to students.

Teacher as Designer and Facilitator

  1. Value and collaborate with parents as partners in their children's education.
  2. Embrace the teacher's role as facilitator, navigator, mentor, and encourager.
  3. Encourage students' curiosity, self-discipline, and ownership of learning.
  4. Solicit and incorporate the voice of students concerning their learning.
  5. Value and collaborate with community and global experts to create challenging, authentic, and meaningful learning experiences and projects for students - including the use of mentors, internships, apprenticeships, field trips, etc.
  6. Design, redesign, and facilitate challenging, authentic, and meaningful work that appeals to students' motives, interests, and learning styles that accomplished the desired learning outcomes and IEP goals.
  7. Value and encourage students to learn any time and any place.
  8. Serve as an advocate for students, promote self-advocacy, and use failure as a valuable part of the learning process that occurs when students challenge themselves.
  9. Use a variety of tools to measure students' engagement, assess students' learning, and report progress data for all student goals in IEP.
  10. Demonstrate appropriate use of various forms of technology to maintain accurate records, communicate, and enhance instruction.
  11. Maintain communication and partner with parents, related service providers, general education teachers, counselors, administrators, community agencies (as appropriate) to ensure compliance with provision of services and promote student success.

Teacher as Role Model and Leader:

  1. Embrace and promote the school system's mission, vision, beliefs, and goals.
  2. Abide by and promote high ethical standards and adhere to the Alabama Code of Ethics for Educators.
  3. Complete all special education paperwork accurately, according to regulations and adhering to specified deadlines.
  4. Collaborate with appropriate agencies to develop appropriate transition plans for students of transition age.
  5. Lead professional learning, mentor aspiring teachers, conduct action research, share expertise, and contribute to the field of education.
  6. Fulfill professional responsibilities beyond those exhibited in the classroom to include participation in school programs, school and system program improvement efforts, and community and parent groups.
  7. Performs other duties as required by school and system leadership.
