Position Purpose The Middle School Social Studies Instructor will be responsible for daily operations for his or her classroom. The teacher is required to provide high quality Social Studies instruction to all students, every day. The classroom environment is supportive and community-based. The teacher is also required to cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with student's families, staff, and other members of the community.
Essential Performance Responsibilities Teaches courses in the area of certification to middle/high school students, using the district approved curriculum, the standards and benchmarks identified for each course, and other curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student with the identified objectives. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction. Responsible for implementing 21ST Century technology skills. Responsible for planning and implementing co-teaching model with special education students and teachers. Demonstrate subject matter concepts and examples using models, projector, computers, or any other standard or approved teacher-prepared instructional aides. Explains learning objectives and student expectations. Provides opportunities when needed for individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students. Differentiates instruction and curriculum to meet individual student needs. Provides opportunities for student goal setting, reflection and self-assessment. Uses assessment to improve learning and instruction. Sets behavior expectations and consequences that are clear and consistently enforced. Participates in functional behavior assessments and in the development of intervention and support plans of individual students as necessary and required. Assumes responsibility for instruction, duties, supervision of students, and required meetings at designated times. Utilizes grading patterns that are fairly administered and based on identified criteria. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports. Maintains and submits accurate and complete records as required. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student's progress and interpret the school program. Interacts with students, staff and parents in a positive and professional manner. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Establish rapport with students and provide a pleasant, safe, and orderly climate conducive to learning. Actively participate in full implementation of the School Improvement Plan. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and school and self-selected professional growth activities. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records. Maintain professional attitudes, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate to students and employees and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the school's educational philosophy. Perform other duties as assigned by administrators.

Equipment Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Qualifications Profile IL Certification/License with Social Studies Endorsement Expert level of technology and 21st century learning understanding and application. Deep knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment driven instruction. Education Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Masters Degree preferred. Experience Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
