Physical Education / Health Teacher

Under the direction of the school principal, the teacher is responsible for planning and delivering instruction in both Physical Education and Health Education. The teacher creates an environment that supports intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth to promote student success. Responsibilities include supervising students, monitoring progress, and collaborating with colleagues, parents, and community members. The teacher is expected to support the goals and mission of Somerset County Public Schools by fostering independent thinking, problem-solving, and critical reasoning skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Educational Requirements:
- Knowledge of SCPS curriculum and effective instructional practices
- Understanding of the teaching and learning process
- Ability to incorporate multiple perspectives and multicultural content
- Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
Training and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university
Certification Requirements:
- Must meet Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification requirements under COMAR 13A.12.02.
- Applicants must hold certification in both Physical Education and Health (Grades PreK-12) or be eligible for both certifications.
- Preference will be given to candidates who hold dual certification in Physical Education and Health.
Special Requirements:
- Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day may be required for professional development, parent engagement, or student events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver instruction aligned with MSDE standards, Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards, and SCPS goals
- Plan and implement high-quality lessons incorporating Maryland Learner Outcomes and Dimensions of Learning
- Use varied instructional strategies and adapt plans based on student needs and data
- Integrate technology meaningfully into daily instruction
- Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment consistent with SCPS policy
- Monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, and communicate regularly with parents
- Participate in school leadership, committees, and collaborative planning
- Serve as a mentor to instructional assistants and volunteers as needed
- Maintain professional competence through ongoing learning and collaboration
Perform other instructional and administrative duties as assigned by the school principal
