Position Summary The Pingry School is seeking a talented, experienced part-time Woodwinds and Brass Teacher to work with students in Grades 4 and 5 at our Lower School campus in Short Hills, New Jersey as part of our after-school Enrichment program.

Instruction takes place on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:00 PM, and the teacher is expected to arrive by 3:05 PM and assist with student dismissal until approximately 4:20 PM.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with elementary-age children of varying skill levels, both individually and in small groups. Responsibilities include preparing students for performances, supporting the Lower School Music Department, and helping foster a strong foundation in instrumental music.

Responsibilities

  • Teach beginner-level woodwind and brass classes in small group settings.
  • Plan and prepare weekly lessons that include developmentally appropriate home practice.
  • Monitor student progress and provide ongoing, individualized feedback.
  • Adapt instruction based on student growth and learning styles.
  • Communicate regularly with parents about progress and at-home practice expectations.
  • Support the Lower School music program and collaborate with faculty as needed.
  • Coordinate and participate in an end-of-session performance or informal sharing event for families.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching elementary-age students, particularly in group settings.
  • Proficiency in woodwind and/or brass instruction and pedagogy.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage both instruction and follow-up.
  • Passion for music education and enthusiasm for working with young learners.
  • Commitment to supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Calendar); experience with Veracross and Finalsite is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience promoting equity and access in a school setting.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to support the school's mission.
  • A collegial, service-oriented mindset and a collaborative approach grounded in restorative practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), with the ability to work effectively across diverse groups and perspectives.

The hourly rate range for this position is $150-$175 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and education.
