ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Delivers direct instructional support to students and instructional staff in the areas of Native American languages & cultures Provides demonstration lessons for students from linguistically and /or culturally diverse backgrounds. Collaborates with site-based language teachers and other Native language teachers. Collaborates on district professional development team for training Native American instruction methods and strategies. Analyzes/reviews the academic needs of Native American students within the service area for language and cultural needs. PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE: Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations’ in-person and on the telephone. Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects. Ability to coordinate the work of others. Proficient with word processing, database and spreadsheet software. Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect. Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students. Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques. Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff. Certificate in TESOL, ESL or Bilingual Education preferred. Knowledge of: literacy and bi-literacy, standards based education, Performance Counts, continuous improvement methodology, first and second language acquisition, and multicultural education. Knowledge of ESL, ELD, sheltering and/or home language instruction. Experience in the design and implementation of systemic professional development. Knowledge and experience with immersion methods for teaching Native American languages REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree 520 license for Native American Language (Navajo and Zuni currently and others eventually). Proficient in Navajo and/or Zuni currently (written and spoken) and eventually other heritage languages. Three years teaching in an elementary or secondary setting with Native American students specifically Navajo and/or Zuni (currently) and other heritage languages eventually.
