Job Description As a High School English Language Arts (ELA) teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will inspire a love for literature and create an engaging classroom culture that prepares students for college. You will be responsible for guiding students through literature that both ignites their passion for reading and develops their critical thinking skills. Your role will include facilitating student-led discussions and encouraging strong voices in our students. By the end of the school year, students will be well-prepared for the academic rigor and independence expected in college. Responsibilities 1. Instruction Teach a robust literature curriculum emphasizing inclusive texts and diversity while preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and SAT coursework. Guide daily content exploration, helping students analyze works by authors such as James Baldwin and Toni Morrison. Develop students' independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion skills. Facilitate student-led discourse, teaching students to use evidence for sophisticated claims and to evaluate arguments. Regularly analyze student comprehension and writing to adapt lessons for maximum learning. Collaborate with fellow educators to support all students’ success. 2. Data Analysis Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to assess trends in student work and provide feedback. Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners. 3. School Culture Build positive relationships with students, ensuring that they feel valued and supported. Engage with students' families to provide resources that meet their learning needs. Participate in practice-based professional development and mentoring sessions. Contribute to weekly, school-wide meetings to foster community and encourage student achievement. Work with your grade level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies. Qualifications A commitment to supporting students' social, emotional, and academic development. Experience collaborating with partners for the benefit of students. A self-directed learner who values feedback for improvement. Required Experience: 1-2 years of experience teaching in urban K-12 schools preferred. Strong background in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Teacher certification is not required at the start of employment, but you must meet New Jersey certification eligibility requirements and obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe after starting. Compensation The salary for this role ranges from $56,000 to $80,000, based on relevant teaching experience, education, and tenure with the organization. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $56,000.
