Job Description
Position: Teacher of English Language Learners & Coordinator of ELL Program
Reports to: Principal or Academic Dean
General Description: Deliver teacher-led instruction and support online learning in a blended learning environment to meet a range of educational needs for youth learning English.
Primary Responsibilities - ELL Teacher
- Provide instruction in English language to English Language Learners
- Develop lessons and units focused on Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking the English language
- Monitor student achievement, student progress, English proficiency levels, and Formerly Limited English Proficient (FLEP) students
- Communicate with students working remotely on a regular basis
- Support ELL students working in the online curriculum
- Implement curriculum in accordance with established procedures
- Create a positive classroom environment conducive to learning
- Maintain accurate records regarding student progress, attendance and engagement
- Communicate student progress and achievement to parents/guardians and students
- Participate in ELL Professional Learning Community
- Participate in school and district planning
- Complete other tasks as directed by the Principal/Academic Dean
- Prepare and administer all standardized tests as directed, including W-APT, WIDA and WIDA Screeners
- Maintain accurate ELL records
- Complete required state and federal reports for Section 41, Title III and others
- Develop, maintain, and revise as needed the school's ELL program
- Identify incoming potential ELL students using the MDE Entrance Protocol
- Process students exiting ELL services
- Monitor's school's compliance with ELL staffing requirements
- Oversee Seal of Biliteracy testing
- Evaluate school's ELL program
- Maintain ELL handbook
Essential Skills and Abilities
- Ability to understand the awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless and at-risk youth that Covenant High School serves
- Ability to adapt and adjust instruction to create multiple paths to meet learning objectives
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Effective organizational skills with the ability to multitask
- Aptitude and working knowledge of computer courseware and hardware
- Ability to impact student achievement through mentoring, motivation, and monitoring practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Certification in Teaching English as a Second Language
- Knowledge of sheltered instruction (SIOP) and other language development methods preferred
- Satisfactory completion of criminal history check
