SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Elementary Teacher is responsible for creating a positive and engaging learning environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of all students. This includes developing and delivering standards-aligned instruction, fostering a culturally responsive classroom, and assessing student progress to inform instruction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons aligned with district and state standards. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students. Integrate technology and innovative teaching strategies to enhance learning. Develop and implement culturally relevant and responsive teaching practices. Utilize a variety of instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles. Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment. Implement school and district behavior expectations using positive behavior supports. Build strong relationships with students, fostering their academic and social-emotional growth. Address individual student needs through intervention strategies and support plans. Foster student independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress. Analyze student performance data to inform instruction and differentiate support. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to guide their learning. Maintain accurate records of student achievement and growth. Communicate student progress with families through conferences, reports, and ongoing engagement. Work collaboratively with grade-level teams, specialists, and support staff. Participate in professional learning communities and school-wide initiatives. Engage in continuous professional development and reflective teaching practices. Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and other educators to support student success. Contribute to a positive school culture and participate in school events and committees. Foster an inclusive learning environment that respects and celebrates diverse backgrounds. Implement instructional practices that affirm student identities and promote equity. Support district initiatives in culturally responsive teaching and anti-racist education. Advocate for student needs and work to eliminate barriers to success. Supervise students during recess, lunch, and other assigned duties. Communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and community members. Maintain compliance with school policies, procedures, and state regulations. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or school leadership team. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Understanding of child development, learning theories, and best practices in elementary education. Knowledge of district, state, and national academic standards and curriculum frameworks. Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching and equity-driven instructional practices. Proficiency in differentiated instruction to support diverse learners for all students. Knowledge of formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor and enhance student learning. Awareness of social-emotional learning (SEL) principles and trauma-informed teaching practices. Understanding of technology integration to enhance instruction and student engagement. Familiarity with positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) and restorative practices. Strong instructional planning and classroom management skills. Ability to design engaging, student-centered lessons that promote critical thinking and problem-solving. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with students, families, and colleagues. Proficiency in using educational technology, including learning management systems and digital tools. Strong organizational skills to manage lesson planning, student assessments, and classroom responsibilities. Collaborative skills to work effectively with colleagues, support staff, and administrators. Data analysis skills to assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while instructing, supervising, and engaging with students. Frequent movement within the classroom and school building, including bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, to assist students and set up instructional materials. Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving of instructional materials, classroom supplies, and equipment (up to 25 pounds). Dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating technology, writing on whiteboards, and handling instructional tools. Ability to actively engage with students in both seated and movement-based activities. Capacity to supervise students during transitions, recess, lunch, and other school-related activities, including outdoor and playground supervision. Ability to respond quickly in emergencies to ensure student safety. Strong auditory ability to listen and respond to student needs and classroom discussions. Visual acuity to read and assess student work, use classroom technology, and monitor student behavior. WORK ENVIRONMENT Elementary teachers work in a dynamic classroom setting, engaging with students individually and in groups while integrating technology and flexible learning strategies. They frequently move throughout the school, supervising students in various spaces such as hallways, cafeterias, and outdoor areas. Collaboration is essential, involving teamwork with colleagues, communication with families, and participation in school events and professional development. The role requires adaptability in a fast-paced environment with varying noise levels and potential exposure to childhood illnesses. Teachers follow a structured schedule with additional responsibilities like lesson planning, grading, and meetings beyond instructional hours, requiring strong time management and organizational skills. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field is required. Valid teaching license/certification in elementary education, as required by state regulations. Prior teaching experience in an elementary setting is preferred, including student teaching or internship experience. Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and curriculum standards for elementary learners. Experience with culturally responsive teaching, differentiated instruction, and classroom management strategies. Familiarity with educational technology, assessment methods, and inclusive teaching practices is beneficial.
