Nevada City School of the Arts (NCSOTA), a TK-8 charter school in operation since 1994, is seeking a dynamic, culturally aware, stimulating and qualified Dance Elective Teacher to join our team.


JOB TITLE: ELECTIVE TEACHER – DANCE
SCHEDULE: 2025/26 School Year – Part-time 4 hrs/wk (Tues/Thurs)
WAGE: $30-$35 per hour, depending on experience


SUMMARY: The Dance Teacher is tasked with teaching all types of dance from all types of cultures, educating students in dance numbers for productions, ensuring the health and safety needs of all students in their care are met, preparing students for their end-of-the-year performances in a manner that nurtures and guides them, with great consideration for the needs of each individual child and the class as a whole, while supporting the vision & mission of NCSOTA.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate type and level of materials in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  • Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
  • Assess student abilities and achievement as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes
  • Communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress
  • Ensure classroom and/or instructional environment is beneficial, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good condition
  • Teach elective dance class to middle school grade levels twice a week in a dedicated classroom space
  • Create dance units and design dance performances that engage all school community stakeholders, including, but not limited to 6th-8th grade performances
  • Teach the knowledge and skills, nurture the confidence and character, and inspire the passion needed for our students to achieve their goals, live their best lives, and positively impact the world
  • Value and draw upon students' experiences and backgrounds
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies based on the diverse needs of all the students that engage all students
  • Develop and administer a variety of assessments to measure students' growth towards goals and to monitor students mastery of the content standards
  • Analyze informal and formal student assessment results and use this information to drive and inform instruction
  • Communicate and collaborate professionally with colleagues, parents, and community members
  • Implement classroom management techniques to create a nurturing and structured classroom environment and structure
  • Maintain high expectations for students achievement and conduct
  • Develop an engaging and inspiring curriculum, integrating the arts, academics and social justice in coordination with NCSOTA's professional arts, music and movement teachers
  • Participate in a team atmosphere with other teachers
  • Provide a level of instruction based on each student's achievement potential, by drawing on and valuing individual backgrounds, identities, interests, temperaments, development of social skills, through thorough lesson preparation, culturally responsive teaching and positive classroom management
  • Promote self-directed, reflective learning for all students by engaging students in identity awareness, problem solving, critical thinking and other activities that make subject matter meaningful
  • Establish and Articulate goals for student learning through the design and implementation of both short- and long-term classroom projects with a focus on equity and antiracism
  • Work Cooperatively with Special Education staff to ensure that neuro-diverse learners are equitably educated, valued, and have a successful school experience
  • Prepare and Continue Upkeep of a culturally aware, organized, clean, and attractive classroom throughout the year
  • Support the efforts of all support staff including electives teachers, visiting artists, and musicians. Support in this area includes assisting with classroom management and supervision of students when necessary
  • Participate in teacher enrichment activities (when school funds allow). Especially those that focus on antiracism, equity, integrating art into the curriculum and promoting NCSOTA's mission
  • Provide Report Cards two times per year (January and June).
  • Arrange for substitute teachers through the Elective Coordinator, the office or directly with the visiting teacher
  • Abide by all personnel policies and procedures adopted by NCSOTA and the At-Will Agreement
  • Accept other duties as assigned

Physical Demands (with or without reasonable accommodations)

  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, demonstrating dance movements with their body, sometimes lifting or supporting students, and maintaining good balance and coordination while performing complex movements for extended periods. Also while being able to physically demonstrate dance steps to students of varying abilities
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE

  • Education: Real world dance experience
  • Experience: Previous experience teaching dance in a group setting and working with middle school students is highly preferred
  • Skills: Strong proficiency across multiple dance genres
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain dance concepts clearly and engage students in a positive and encouraging manner
  • Classroom Management: Ability to create and maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Passion for Teaching: A genuine enthusiasm for working with young students and fostering their love of dance
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2 years working with children, preferably in a school setting
  • Conflict resolution training a plus

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: These requirements must be met prior to beginning employment and will be requested upon job offer acceptance.

  • Fingerprint and Background clearance
  • Valid Tuberculosis clearance and every four years thereafter
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within 45 days of employment and every two years thereafter
  • Completion of mandatory training (video & in-person) within 6 weeks of employment and every year thereafter.
