Summary
TITLE: Certified Teacher – 21st Century Afterschool Program DEPARTMENT: After School Program REPORTS TO: 21st Century Community Learning Center Education Director RATE: $35/hour | 2–2.5 hours per day | Monday–Thursday | Part-time with flexible days available if needed
SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: The Certified Teacher supports small group learning during the 21st Century Afterschool Program, helping students in grades K–5build academic and social-emotional skills in a safe, supportive environment. Teachers are primarily responsible for supporting students during homework and academic enrichment time, using provided materials and smartboards.
Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Leads small groups of students during academic enrichment and homework support, maintaining a 1:15 staff-to-student ratio. Uses interactive smartboardsand other instructional tools to guide learning during homework time and enrichment sessions. Reinforces literacy, math, science, and study skills throughengaging activities. Applies differentiated instruction and accommodations to address varied student learning needs. Builds strong, supportive relationships with students and helps maintain a positive, inclusive environment. Assists students with educational technology (Chromebooks, learning apps, web-based platforms, etc.). Monitors students during transitions and snack while implementing positive behavior supports. Collaborates with site staff to ensure student safety and successful program operation. Maintains reliable, consistent attendance.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS: Must hold a valid Connecticut teacher certification. Comfortable working with a diverse range of learners, including students with academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs. Strong classroom management and group facilitation skills. Familiarity with smartboards and instructional technology preferred. Flexible, collaborative, and committed to student-centered learning. WORK ENVIRONMENT PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to sit, stand, and move frequently during program hours. Active afterschool setting with frequent transitions and multitasking. Requires strong visual/auditory attention and ability to manage multiple priorities.

The preschool program at the Boys Girls Club of Meriden provides care for children ages 3–5 years old and promotes positive relationships among all children and adults. Our curriculum is consistent with its goals for children and promotes development and learning in the following areas: social, physical, emotional, cognitive and language. The program uses culturally, developmentally, and linguistically appropriate effective teaching approaches. Systematic, informal and formal assessments provide feedback on each child’s learning and development. We employ and support a teaching staff with the educational qualifications, professional commitment and knowledge necessary to promote children’s learning and development. We establish and maintain collaborative relationships with each child’s family to foster their development in all settings. The program has a healthful and safe environment that provides appropriate and well-maintained outdoor and indoor physical activities.
