About La Escuela Comunitaria del Bronx

La Escuela Comunitaria del Bronx (ECB) is a free, private 11-month progressive inquiry-based, dual language (Spanish-English) program that seeks to serve families and their children in the Bronx. Beginning with early childhood education, ECB seeks to promote student learning success and impactful community engagement by providing a challenging instructional program, expanded learning opportunities for both students and their advocates, and a full range of health and social services for members of the school community. ECB services toddlers and preschoolers (2s, 3s and/or 4s) and will grow to serve children up to 5 years old. The Lead Teacher will play a pivotal role as a founding team member of ECB, as they value early childhood, play-based learning and multilingual development.

Mindset, Roles and Responsibilities Overview:

While working with ECBs first students, who will be two years old, the Lead Teacher will be expected to:

  • Facilitate childrens learning and development through a Spanish immersion program with the support of two Associate Teachers and the Head of School
  • Apply a progressive pedagogical approach to meet the developmental needs and interests of their young students
  • Design and implement lesson plans that support all developmental domains and childrens interests
  • Apply culturally as well as emotionally responsive practices that support childrens sense of agency
  • Proactively mentor and support Associate Teachers in developmentally appropriate practices, as well as through a dual language based, child-led curricula
  • Observe, document, and assess childrens play and development that informs their planning and instruction
  • Support young students in reaching developmental milestones while valuing individual differences
  • Screen and identify when a student may need to be referred for a developmental evaluation for support services
  • Collaborate with young students, families, and educational support staff that encourage and scaffold childrens learning through play
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with children and their families, &
  • Adhere to health and safety procedures.

Professional Qualifications:

A successful candidate will be a driven bilingual (Spanish/English) early childhood educator with:

  • A Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in early childhood education (ECE)
    • OR
  • a Bachelors or advanced degree in another field with coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education + experience teaching preschool-age children
  • A NYS Birth-Grade 2 certification or a study plan to achieve that in the near future. Bilingual extension preferred
  • A proficiency in speaking, writing and teaching in English and Spanish
  • Experience working in a progressive ECE Program
  • Experience working with children identified with developmental disabilities/delays
  • Initiative to take on a leadership role in the classroom
  • Strong computer and data entry skills
  • An ability to possess and maintain current First Aid/CPR certification and
  • Proof of completion of NYC DoH mandated workshops including but not limited to Mandated Reporter, Family Engagement, Health & Safety, Identifying and Responding to Anaphylaxis: Elijahs Law, Preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Promoting Safe Sleeping
