KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of 18 free, public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Position Overview:
KIPP NYC is looking for teachers who combine the ability to motivate and educate, to develop academic as well as character skills, and to make a college preparatory education relevant both now and for the future. This role focuses on developing students' musical skills, fostering a deeper appreciation for music, and preparing them for advanced musical studies or lifelong enjoyment of music. The teacher will instruct students in vocal and/or instrumental music, music theory, and music history, while also organizing and directing school performances.
Duties and Responsibilities:
General responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Develop and implement a comprehensive music curriculum that aligns with the school’s standards and the New York City Blueprint for the Arts standards.
- Teach a range of music concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, music theory, and music history.
- Foster a positive classroom culture that encourages creativity, collaboration, and respect for diverse musical expressions.
- Provide instruction in vocal and/or instrumental music, including choir, band, or orchestra, as applicable.
- Maintain school-owned or rented musical instruments/equipment and coordinate with vendors for repairs, or replacements.
- Oversee the inventory and maintenance of music library resources.
- Introduce students to diverse musical genres and cultural traditions.
- Utilize a variety of teaching methods, resources, and technologies to accommodate diverse learning styles and needs of middle school students.
- Assess and evaluate student progress, providing constructive feedback to support individual growth and development.
- Organize and direct school musical performances, concerts, and assemblies.
- Potentially organize and lead student participation in competitions.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to school-wide initiatives.
- Teaching students in a high-quality, exciting way.
- Committing to constant professional and personal growth through working closely as part of a team of teachers.
- Constantly assessing student progress, and communicating results to families and colleagues.
- Providing individual or small group instruction for students who need additional assistance.
- Modeling a “whatever it takes” spirit to ensure that each student is successful.
- Modeling the school’s values in all communications with students, families, and staff.
- Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment and a healthy measure of the character traits we value: zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude and a sense of humor.
- At least two years of teaching experience strongly preferred
- New York State teacher certification in the appropriate content area
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Proficiency in vocal and/or instrumental music and knowledge of music theory and pedagogy.

Additional Information
Compensation and Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $70,829 - $142,270 per year. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role, NYS initial or professional certification, and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP NYC will evaluate a candidate’s years of experience, certification, and longevity at point of hire to determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale.
