Position Purpose

Responsible for planning and implementing the daily program, maintaining quality care for children within an assigned age group. Designed to promote the social, physical and intellectual growth of the children under his/her care, demonstrating appropriate discipline skills. Maintain classroom records, cleanliness and safety. Keeps parents appropriately informed of the progress of their child on a daily basis, consulting with the Center Director.

Essential Functions

• Plans individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using play equipment.
• Establishes and maintains a safe, healthy learning environment in a manner consistent with the philosophy and goals of the center.
• Evaluates and reacts quickly with sound judgment and problem solving skills in complex and critical situations such as injuries and accidents.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to receive and respond to telephone inquires.
• Observes records and reports to Director any significant individual or group behavior which might affect the children.
• Instructs children in practices of personal cleanliness and self care.
• Alternates periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest or light activity to avoid overstimulation and fatigue.
• Helps children develop habits of caring for own clothing and picking up and putting away toys and books.
• Prepares all daily records for attendance and food programs.
• Immediately notifies Director of needed repairs to room, building, equipment and/or toys.
• Serves meals and refreshments to children.

Specialized Know-How & Requirements

• An undergraduate degree or higher from an accredited College or University or at least 6 semester hours in courses directly related to child care and/or child development from birth to age six required.
• Minimum of one year of directly related experience working with children under six years of age required.
• Must obtain Adult, Child, & Infant CPR, and First Aid at hire, or within 30 days of hire.
• Must obtain Food Handlers class, SIDS, SBS, Mandated Reporter class at hire or within 30 days of hire.
• Must obtain Illinois Gateways Membership at hire or within 30 days of hire.
• Must apply for credentials through INCCRRA at hire or within 90 days of hire.
• Must obtain Introduction to Environmental Rating scale class within the first year of hire.
• Must maintain thirty (30) clock hours of job-related continuing education in the first year of employment and at least twenty-four (24) clock hours of job-related continuing education each year after.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrates the ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
• Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served. Able to assess and interpret data about the child's status in order to identify each child's needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the pediatric patient group.

Compensation Range

$16.25 - $24.38
