One of those innovative learning models is West Michigan Virtual Academy.
West Michigan Virtual Academy (WMVA) is a hybrid alternative education program that blends virtual learning with in-person support, serving nearly 400 high school students in the Battle Creek region and a growing number of middle level students across Michigan. WMVA empowers students by providing flexible academic support, behavioral coaching, and postsecondary planning designed for student success. WMVA provides targeted interventions for at-risk students, including students with disabilities, through a combination of instructional services, accommodations, and behavioral supports that prioritize student growth and success.
The Role:
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Special Education Teacher to serve students in a hybrid alternative education setting. This educator will provide direct instruction, progress monitoring, and support services to middle and high school students with IEPs. The ideal candidate will work closely with general education teachers, families, and service providers to ensure student needs are met in both virtual and in-person environments.
You will also serve as a case manager, ensuring IEP compliance and helping students make meaningful progress toward both academic and functional goals.
Core Competencies for the Position:
Instructional Support • Provide specially designed instruction to students in both online and face-to-face formats • Develop and implement individualized learning plans aligned with IEP goals • Adapt general education curriculum to meet students' needs and promote access to content • Collaborate with general education staff to support co-teaching and inclusion models
IEP Management & Compliance • Lead IEP meetings and communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and support staff • Maintain all documentation in accordance with IDEA, MARSE, and district policies • Monitor and report on student progress using formative data and goal-aligned benchmarks • Ensure all related services and accommodations are implemented with fidelity
Student Advocacy & Whole-Child Support • Identify and remove learning barriers to promote access and success • Use PBIS and MTSS frameworks to support social, emotional, and behavioral development • Help students develop essential skills for independence, life after graduation, and postsecondary readiness • Build meaningful relationships with students and families that promote trust and support
Collaboration & Communication • Communicate clearly with students, families, and teams in both in-person and virtual formats • Serve as a resource to staff on instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications • Work closely with Center Directors, teachers, and instructional coaches to align supports with broader goals • Utilize technology effectively to track progress and connect with students remotely

What You'll Need: • Bachelor's degree required with special education endorsement (preferred SLD, CI, or EI)) • Experience working with at-risk student populations • Strong communication and relationship-building skills • Ability to manage multiple student cases and follow up consistently • Experience with behavior plans, SEL, or postsecondary/career advising is highly preferred • Familiarity with resources such as Michigan Works!, MCAN, or EDP platforms

Days: 185 Days per school year
Pay: $44,000 with the ability to earn 3% in merit pay
