TITLE: Special Education Teacher
JOB GOAL: To accurately evaluate and determine eligibility for students referred to special education and develop and implement appropriate Individualized Education Plans for students determined to be eligible for special education services.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal and the Special Education Coordinator
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in special education and/or collaborative
Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development
Good public relations skills
Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students
Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
Knowledge of and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology and assist in instructional practices
Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple
Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.

Develops lesson plans to meet school system's goals using Alabama State Course(s) of Study and/or Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards (when applicable).
As an inclusion teacher, collaborates with general education teachers to plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities to help ensure that each student reaches maximum educational
As small group setting teacher, plans and employs a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities utilizing Extended Standards and Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA) goals to ensure that each student reaches maximum educational
Manages the behavior of learners in the classroom and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the
Implements and updates the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) as
Actively participates and works with school personnel and other IEP team members in the selection of curriculum goals, specialized equipment, and other instructional materials, to provide the student with maximum learning opportunities.
Documents student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and progress
Follows rules, guidelines, and procedures of Section 504 and IDEA
Effectively implements special education processes such as eligibility, IEP, FBA, BIP, manifestation determination,
Maintains student records and submits required reports and data according to established protocols and time
Participates in Managing Crisis Safely (MCS) training as requested and approved by the Central Office special education
Collaborates with the Operations Director, local school administration, and counselors in identifying maintenance
Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on matters related to student discipline, Virtual School, student attendance, RYAS, court referrals, hearings, bullying/harassment concerns, and any other school
Collaborates with teachers, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to special education, IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, disciplining students in special education, gifted education, accommodations/modifications to the curriculum, and all other items that may fall under special/gifted
Collaborates with school bookkeeper on matters related to finance, purchase orders, receipting monies, budgets, purchasing, and all other items that may fall under the finance department
Collaborates with the Technology Director, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to technology; including purchasing, deployment, repairs, and all other items that may fall under the Technology Director's supervision.
Supervises and instructs students according to school system policies and best practices.
Supervises mentees and student teachers as
Communicates, through verbal or written/electronic correspondence, with parents/guardians about student progress, concerns, and academic achievement.
Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on ongoing assessments to monitor student progress, interprets and uses data for instructional planning and teaching, and program
Collaborates with local school administration and counselors to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and local
Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.

SALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule
