Job Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for a Special Education Teacher for Friendship School within the Special Education department of the Student Services and Programs division. This position will plan, implement, and monitor the daily progress of students and supervise special education assistants in classroom programs. Individuals must have the physical ability to lift students ranging in weight from infant to adult. Additionally, toileting and changing feed tubes is required of this position.

ABOUT FRIENDSHIP SCHOOL Friendship School is a five-classroom special education school operated by the San Diego County Office of Education. The school is located in Imperial Beach. Friendship School serves a maximum of 50 students, ages 3-22 years, who have multiple, severe disabilities with health impairments. Each classroom is staffed by a teacher and two student attendants. Each teacher holds a special education credential and all staff are continually trained on specialized healthcare procedures. The school has a staff to student ratio of one adult to three students. Friendship School has a full time RN, a part time occupational therapist, part time speech/language therapist, part time assistive technology specialist, a part time psychologist, and a physical therapist on consult.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field preferred Prior experience in supervising and/or teaching severely handicapped children is preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Credentials: One of the following two Valid California credentials requirements: Education Specialist Instruction Credential - moderate/severe disabilities or physical and health impairments authorization (must possess or be eligible for)(or related credential authorization); or, Basic California K-12 teaching credential and a California special education credential - severely, physically handicapped credential preferred. (or related credential authorization)

CLAD or equivalent English Learner authorization Valid CPR and First Aid certification Early Childhood Special Education certificate and Orthopedic Impairments added authorization preferred Applicants must have experience in the development and writing of Individualized Education Plans (IEP), assessment procedures, and adherence to federal and state regulations; knowledge of affective and cognitive areas, fine motor development, communication behavior management, academic development, including a variety of strategies for teaching students who have multiple disabilities/orthopedic impairments and medical needs; an understanding of emotional problems of students and parents of students affected with the most significant disabilities; and basic knowledge of specialized health care needs; specialized equipment, such as wheelchairs, braces and adaptive devices; and assistive technology. *** We are also accepting applications for those candidates who are eligible to receive an internship credential as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. To be considered for this option, please obtain and attach an Eligibility for Intern Credential letter (addressed to The San Diego County Office of Education) as issued by your university.
