Special Education Teacher
Chambers County Board of Education is seeking a Special Education Teacher. The qualifications include:
- A valid Alabama teacher certificate in the area of instructional exceptionality.
- Meeting the definition for highly qualified teacher according to Alabama definition.
- Meeting the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
- Alternatives to the above as required by the Board.
The FLSA status is Exempt. The position is supervised by the Principal and Special Education Director and supervises Job Coach, Paraprofessionals, and Teacher Interns as assigned.
The required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Administering educational achievement tests to assess students' levels of competencies and needs.
- Assessing students' needs in the areas of academics, behavior, social/emotional development, transition and related services.
- Scheduling referral, eligibility, reevaluation, and IEP meetings, as well as any other needed meetings.
- Coordinating and assisting in the development of an IEP designed to provide special education and related services that meets the educational, behavioral, social/emotional, functional, developmental and transitional needs of the student.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of the students.
- Monitoring student participation and progress in regular education programs, by collaborating with regular education teachers and providing remediation materials upon request.
- Assuming the leadership role in eligibility and IEP meetings and completing forms relevant to input on students discussed at the meetings.
- Evaluating the educational program and student progress according to the IEP.
- Attending workshops, conferences and/or conventions related to special education services to maintain growth in professional development and meet state certification guidelines.
- Maintaining appropriate records and submitting reports as required.
- Establishing and maintaining a standard of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Maintaining open lines of communication with students, support agencies, and the student's parents concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
- Cooperating with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods, and the development of the curriculum.
- Maintaining confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
- Modeling and maintaining high ethical standards.
- Demonstrating initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
- Maintaining expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
- Participating successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
- Keeping supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- Responding to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
- Serving on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
- Exhibiting interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
- Demonstrating support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
- Demonstrating initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
- Preparing all required reports and maintaining all appropriate records within required time lines.
- Assuming other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
- Using technology in the classroom and for management of the special education process.
Terms of employment are according to the Board's salary schedule. Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policies and programs of evaluation of professional personnel.
