Position Summary Provide comprehensive educational support to students with visual impairments including blindness, low vision, and cortical visual impairment across various educational settings. Your specialized training will ensure students develop compensatory skills while accessing appropriate academic curriculum and social experiences. Serve students from early childhood through graduation, adapting instructional approaches to meet developmental needs and individual learning styles. Collaborate with educational teams to create inclusive environments that promote student participation and achievement across all school activities. Primary Functions Deliver direct instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum including compensatory academic skills, orientation and mobility concepts, social interaction techniques, and independent living preparation. Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media evaluations to guide instructional decision-making. Provide specialized instruction in braille literacy including literary braille and technical codes for mathematics and science. Train students in assistive technology applications including screen reading software, magnification programs, and portable devices for academic and daily living tasks. Adapt and modify educational materials using appropriate formats such as braille, large print, tactile graphics, and digital media. Consult with classroom teachers regarding accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies that support student access to curriculum content. Essential Requirements Master's degree in Visual Impairment Education or related special education field from accredited institution. Valid Kentucky teaching certificate with Visual Impairment endorsement. Two years of documented experience working with students with visual impairments in school settings. Proficiency in unified English braille and specialized codes including Nemeth mathematics notation. Knowledge of assistive technology devices and software for students with visual impairments. Understanding of visual system development and impact of visual impairment on learning. Strong assessment skills for evaluating student progress and determining instructional needs. Excellent collaboration and communication abilities for working with diverse teams. Cultural competency and sensitivity to family values and perspectives. Preferred Qualifications Additional endorsements in areas such as orientation and mobility or multiple disabilities. Experience serving students with visual impairments and complex needs or multiple disabilities. Training in specific assistive technology programs and emerging technologies. Knowledge of transition planning and preparation for post-secondary education or employment. Professional development in behavioral support strategies or mental health interventions.
