Job Summary: We are seeking a highly qualified and student-centered Remote Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) to provide virtual instruction and support services to students with hearing impairments inMichigan. The ideal candidate will hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate with the appropriate endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing education and have experience working in virtual or hybrid learning environments. This position focuses on ensuring access to the general education curriculum, fostering communication development, and advocating for the unique needs of DHH students.
Key Responsibilities: Provide virtual direct instruction and consultation services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Develop and implement IEPs in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, families, and service providers, ensuring compliance with IDEA and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) guidelines.
Adapt instructional materials and strategies to meet the language, communication, and learning needs of each student.
Support the development of language, auditory, and communication skills, including American Sign Language (ASL), spoken English, or total communication, as appropriate.
Collaborate with general education teachers to provide accommodations, modifications, and inclusive practices in virtual settings.
Participate in virtual IEP meetings, evaluations, and eligibility determinations.
Provide guidance and training to staff and families regarding hearing loss, assistive technology (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems), and accessibility tools.
Maintain accurate records, progress reports, and documentation required for compliance and service tracking.
Stay current with best practices in DHH education and remote instructional strategies.
Qualifications: Bachelors or Masters degree in Deaf Education or related field (required).
Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing(required).
Experience providing instruction and support to DHH students, preferably in a remote or blended environment.
Proficiency in ASL, signed English, or other communication modalities (as appropriate to students' needs).
Strong understanding of assistive listening devices, accessibility tools, and deaf culture.
Knowledge of IDEA, ADA, Section 504, and Michigan-specific special education policies.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and time-management skills.
Comfortable using virtual learning platforms and technology tools such as Zoom, Google Meet, Canvas, or similar.
Preferred Qualifications: ASL certification or fluency highly preferred.
Experience with early intervention, K12, or transition-age youth.
Familiarity with Michigans IEP systems (e.g., Illuminate, PowerSchool, etc.).
Bilingual (English/Spanish) or multilingual skills a plus.
