Part-Time Orientation and Mobility Teacher 2025-26

Roanoke County Public Schools seeks to employ a part-time Orientation and Mobility Teacher for the -26 school year.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Teacher provides services to students, typically impacted by Visual Impairments (VI) or Blindness, that enable them to move and travel safely and independently in their home, community, and school settings. The O&M Teacher also trains teachers and staff on safe and appropriate travel skills for reinforcement with students.
This position is 14 hours per week. Starting at $30 per hour.
ESSENTIAL TASKS

• Conducts O&M evaluations at the direction of student IEP Teams or Eligibility Teams
• Provides information and data to IEP teams, including information related to student present levels of performance, goals, accommodations, and services as they relate to orientation and mobility
• Participates in IEP meetings and other related meetings as needed and/or requested
• Monitors and evaluates student progress using data related to O&M IEP goals
• Uses research-based techniques to teach students about safe movement in familiar and unfamiliar environments
• Prepares and uses equipment and materials to assist in student learning of essential O&M skills (i.e. tactile maps, optical devices, pre-canes, long canes, GPS devices, etc.)
• Establishes open lines of communication with students, teachers, parents, and other relevant staff
• Works with the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) to conduct functional vision assessments as it relates to independent travel
• Demonstrates professional and effective interpersonal skills needed to work with teachers, students, and parents
• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required : Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university or college; experience in providing orientation and mobility services to children and/or young adults in an educational, rehabilitation, hospital, or other human services field
Preferred : Master’s Degree; certification from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
