Responsibilities: Teach general music classes to grades PK-8 using the Archdiocese of Washington Curriculum Standards Create content-rich and standards-based lessons and activities that reflect current best practices Introduce various types of musical literature into the curriculum and incorporate instructional methods such as Kodaly, solfege, Orff) Teach skills in choral singing and music (e.g., vocal technique, music literacy, harmony, rhythm) Teach instrumental band instruction (e.g., percussion, woodwinds, and brass) Plan, rehearse and direct weekly school Mass music appropriate for the liturgical seasons Create, organize, and direct school musical concerts/programs (including preparing and maintaining choir folders) Evaluate and assess each student's musical growth and performance Prepare students for future musical opportunities at the high school level and beyond Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administration, and parish communities Attend Archdiocese of Washington and school staff meetings Any other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or Pastor Qualifications: Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church and familiarity with Catholic liturgy Commitment to the mission of Catholic education and building an exemplary general music program Understanding of vocal technique/how to develop young voices in particular Excellent choral and band conducting technique and experience Ability to maintain a positive learning environment through excellent classroom management and organizational skills Strong keyboard skills preferred
