The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Department of Music invites applications for an adjunct/part-time artist-teacher of trumpet. The successful candidate will teach weekly private studio lessons beginning in the Fall 2025 semester, which starts on August 26, 2025. The per-semester contract may be renewable.
Minimum Qualifications: Earned M.M degree in trumpet performance or advanced degree in music with relevant professional and artistic experience. Proven record of high-level artistry and performance experience in solo and chamber music, as well as professional orchestra/ensemble settings. Private studio teaching experience with various levels and abilities, as well as substantial collegiate level instruction (including as a TA). The availability and commitment to teach regularly on campus during the semester. Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including timely communication via email.
Desired Qualifications: Terminal degree (or ABD) in trumpet performance. Proven record of high-level artistry and performance experience in jazz setting (in addition to the minimum required solo, chamber, and orchestral settings). Substantial collegiate level instruction (including as a TA) in jazz performance and/or jazz pedagogy (in addition to the minimum required traditional/classical teaching experience). High visibility in New Jersey and the region, with the ability to attract talented students to the College. Demonstrable commitment to student recruitment and growth and stability of the trumpet studios in collaboration with the Director of the Bands , other trumpet faculty, and the brass area faculty. Familiarity with K-12 teaching and/or instrumental pedagogy. Ability to teach relevant courses to the candidate's area(s) of expertise, including (but not limited to) brass chamber music and music education courses.
Responsibilities: Give weekly in-person private lessons (for both music majors and non-music majors) on TCNJ's campus (Ewing, NJ) at mutually agreed dates between the instructor and the students, following the College's academic calendar, i.e., leading 13 weekly lessons per semester. (AY 2025-26 Calendar: https://academics.tcnj.edu/academic-calendars/academic-calendar-2025-26/). Provide course syllabus, course audit, and mid-term and final grades in a timely manner. Participate in brass area jury exams during the final exam week. Attend degree recitals of students in one's studio. Participate in entrance auditions of prospective brass students. Additional course(s) such as chamber ensemble coaching may be available depending on the departmental needs and candidate's expertise and interest.
Compensations: Salary will be per studio instructional hour. Separate honorarium may be available for additional departmental events such as "Music Major for a Day." There will be no moving or travel (mileage, toll, etc.) expenses reimbursement attached to this position.
