Position Summary: The Juneau School District, located in Alaska's capital city on the lands of the ak'w Kwan, is seeking an outstanding middle school teacher to serve as Math and Science teacher in the Tlingit Culture Language and Literacy Program. The District is seeking an individual with strong teaching and curriculum development skills to help TCLL expand its program into the middle grades. TCLL welcomed 6th and 7th grade students in 2023-24, with plans to add an 8th grade classroom in 2024-25. The successful candidate will teach middle school math and science and will collaborate with the middle school Tlingit language teacher, Tlingit Elders, and other members of the TCLL team, to design curriculum that is thematic, place-based, culturally responsive, and grounded in the core cultural values of Lingt Aan. The successful candidate will be a proven collaborator and dedicated to teaching in a bi-cultural, bi-literacy environment as TCLL seeks to raise the status of the Tlingit culture and language among our students and the community. Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in education.
Valid Alaska Teacher's Certificate (Type A) with a secondary endorsement in math and/or science.
A basic proficiency in the Tlingit language as evidenced by the successful completion of at least 3 credit hours of university level Tlingit language, or a passing score on the TCLL Incoming Student Assessment.
Experience working with place-based and culturally responsive curriculum.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong knowledge and background in math and science instruction and dual language instruction.
Successful experience in serving children of varied ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
Deep knowledge of and respect for the Tlingit culture and language.
Proven ability to develop thematic, place-based, culturally responsive curriculum.
Willingness to pursue Tlingit language teaching endorsement.
Responsibilities:
Teach middle school curriculum aligned with state standards and infused with Tlingit culture and language.
Use language teaching strategies to increase Tlingit language proficiency for students who speak a language other than Tlingit at home.
Collaborate with other TCLL staff and Sealaska Heritage Institute staff to develop effective middle school curriculum.
Participate effectively at team meetings with teachers, support staff, and outside agencies using appropriate social skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution strategies.
