Job Description
As an Uncommon Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, you will ignite a passion for literature in your students while developing a classroom culture that promotes engagement and learning. You will guide students through the socio-emotional challenges of middle school, emphasizing writing and discourse to help them express their unique voices. Our curriculum incorporates research-based instructional strategies to foster discussion, enhance reading comprehension, and encourage student agency. By the end of eighth grade, students will be well-prepared for the academic demands and college preparatory focus of our high schools.
Responsibilities
Instruction
Empower students through an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum aimed at achieving equitable outcomes for all learners.
Guide students in analyzing literary and non-narrative texts, assessing authors' purposes, and engaging in meaningful, student-led discourse.
Create an inclusive, safe environment that encourages students to express their authentic voices through speaking and writing.
Encourage independent reading by helping students choose books that align with their interests and passions.
Data Analysis
Collaborate weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze trends in student work and assessments, responding to their needs and progress.
Implement differentiated instruction strategies tailored for diverse learners in your classroom.
School Culture
Build positive, trusting relationships with students, ensuring they feel seen, loved, and heard.
Partner with families to provide support and resources for each child's learning needs.
Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching to enhance your teaching skills.
Participate in school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement.
Collaborate with grade-level teams to set academic goals and refine instructional practices.
Qualifications

Required Experience:
A strong interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration, but candidates must meet New Jersey state certification eligibility requirements (a final undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 for graduates on or after 9/1/16, or 2.75 for those graduated prior to 9/1/16). All instructional staff must become certified in New Jersey within a reasonable time after starting employment.

Compensation
The salary range for this role is between $56,000 to $80,000. Starting pay is determined by various factors, including relevant experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $56,000.
