Position: Math Specialist/Math Teacher

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and the Executive Director, the Math Specialist/Math Teacher provides and leads math instruction and assessment to tutorial sites, through a combination of modeling and coaching.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Monitors the instructional program provided by tutors and provide ongoing support and coaching to help tutors and coordinators improve performance and achieve math objectives.
•Provides intense coaching on the use of the instructional model.
•Facilitate tutors and coordinators use of evidence-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for all learners.
•Coordinates the gathering, selecting, and analysis of data with respect to math in collaborating with tutors and coordinators. •Assists coordinators and the Program Coordinator in identifying strengths and areas for improvement in math and recommend responses that maximize student achievement in math and math development.
•Work to close the achievement gap between students' teachers and homework in math.
•Takes initiatives and proactively identify ways to strengthen tutorial sites.
•Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability with a sense of urgency and zeal for ensuring that all students meet grade level expectations (at a minimum) in foundational math skills.
•Demonstrates professionalism and seeks out feedback and provides constructive feedback to tutors, coordinators, Program Coordinator, and the Executive Director.
•Support Fun Friday and SOL Saturday activities.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
•Current knowledge of research and effective practices in the areas of math development, math instruction, assessment, and professional development
•Ability to provide coaching to coordinators, assistant coordinators, tutors, and volunteers on the alignment of the written, taught, and tested curriculum
•Provide tutorial sites leadership regarding curriculum, pacing, and resources to support instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of the knowledge, skills, and processes of education as defined in the Math Virginia Standards of Learning.
•Ability to analyze data at the student and tutorial site levels and be able to assist coordinators, assistant coordinators on the use of this data to modify their instruction to increase academic performance
•Train coordinators, assistant coordinators, and volunteers in the scope of Math: fluency, numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and statistics/measurement and data including processing domains.
•Excellent interpersonal skills, flexible, and approachable work style
•Ability to relate easily to parents, coordinators, and assistant coordinators, and to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups

•Proficient in the use of technology

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
•Valid Teaching License required, Mathematics Specialist endorsement recommended, Mathematics Degree recommended, and or currently teaches math
•Minimum three years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching mathematics at the appropriate grade level span
•Experience working in diverse settings
