About the Position: Description
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Literacy Teacher / Reading Specialist to work under the supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator and according to school administrative directives, plan, implement and provide assistance with literacy based activities and reading and writing help sessions at 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The successful candidate will perform literacy based activities, reading and writing help sessions as well as attend and/or present at parent nights; attend teacher professional development workshops; provide reference and readers' advisory services to children and teachers at the school; promote reading and library use to students, parents and teachers; and collaborate with after-school staff in planning and implementing programs that will fit the needs of the children as well as increase their SOL scores. Experience working with elementary age children in a school setting required. Four-year degree in education required; specialization in reading or literature preferred. Applicants must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license.
