The Elementary Special Education Teacher at Keaukaha Elementary School will be responsible for providing individualized education to students with varying disabilities, ensuring they receive the appropriate support and instruction to meet their educational goals. This role involves creating and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), collaborating with general education teachers, specialists, and families, and fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Responsibilities: Develop and Implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Assess students' abilities and needs to determine appropriate IEP goals and objectives. Create and adapt lesson plans to meet each student’s unique needs and learning styles. Regularly review and update IEPs to reflect students' progress and changing needs. Instruction and Support: Provide direct instruction to students in various subjects, focusing on their individual needs and abilities. Use a variety of teaching methods, including hands-on activities, technology, and differentiated instruction, to engage students and enhance learning. Implement behavior management strategies to support positive behavior and create a conducive learning environment. Collaboration: Work closely with general education teachers to ensure students with disabilities are included in mainstream classrooms whenever possible. Collaborate with other specialists (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists) to provide comprehensive support to students. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to discuss student progress, goals, and any concerns. Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress and determine the effectiveness of instructional strategies. Use assessment data to inform instruction and make necessary adjustments to teaching methods and IEP goals. Compliance and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, IEP meetings, and any other relevant documentation. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding special education services and documentation. Professional Development: Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in special education. Engage in collaborative professional learning communities within the school to share strategies and improve instructional practices. Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of students with disabilities within the school and the broader community. Promote awareness and understanding of special education and inclusive practices among staff, students, and families. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred. Certification: Valid teaching certification in Special Education. Experience: Previous experience working with elementary-aged children with disabilities is highly desirable. Skills: Strong understanding of special education laws and regulations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to create and implement effective IEPs. Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with children with special needs. If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.
