Title: Instrumental Music Teacher, Secondary
Reports to: Site Principal
Salary Schedule Range: Depends on Experience, from Class I, Step 1 $66,022.11 to highest placement at Class III, Step 13 $110,995.70 to start listed in the Human Resources section of District website under B-6 Certificated Base Pay. Annual stipends for a Master's and Doctorate degrees.

Purpose of Position: Teach all levels of music to junior high and/or high school age students.

Implement classroom instruction and student supports based on student achievement data.
Review the results of assessments and implement interventions to assure that all students meet grade level proficiencies.
Support the achievement of all students, in particular a heightened level of focus on socio-economically, culturally, ethnically, racially and linguistically diverse student populations.
Student-Centered Carry out the school's program expectations to meet the needs of all segments of the community.
Provide opportunities for students to see their own background and experiences through the curriculum.

Communicating important classroom information to all students and families in the classes.
Culture and Climate Establish and maintain high expectations for achievement and implement systematic supports using Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) so all students can achieve standards.
Participate in family engagement programs
Carry out the school's student behavior policies and procedures with an emphasis on addressing the disproportionality of the system's impact on specific student groups (i.e. students of color, students with disabilities, socio-economically disadvantaged).
Assume responsibility before, during, and after school hours for the health, safety, and welfare of students.
Maintain the classroom as a safe space for students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions: Teach junior high and/or high school instrumental music.
Teach woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings. Classes include concert band, orchestra, marching band, drum line, and jazz band. Classes at the high school level may include Color Guard/Winter Guard.
Interpersonal skills to clearly communicate and collaborate with marching band assistants, color guard instructors, colleagues, and community partners.
Ability to demonstrate fundamental knowledge (may consider saying something about more advanced techniques as well and technical ability on all woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments.
Exhibit basic piano skills and grasp of music terminology/theory.
Ability to perform minor repairs on instruments and tune string instruments.
Design intermediate and advanced instrumental lesson plans in alignment with district curriculum and Common Core State Standards, which also address student acquisition of music skills and differentiation for EL students and students with special needs.
Performance level proficiency on one or more instruments.
Knowledge and ability to arrange and transpose scores to accommodate student levels and success.
Knowledge of trends and research reflecting instrumental and high school music pedagogies.
Direct student concerts, assemblies, competitions and parades. Collaborate with the vocal and theatre arts staff in total school productions.
Develop a balanced program with appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop good skills and attitudes.
Establish and maintain standard of pupil behavior.
Coordination of fundraisers as appropriate to program goals; collaborate with parent booster club for support as appropriate.
Direct student concerts, assemblies, competitions and parades. (I would add here that at times these events take place outside the regular school day)
Non-Essential Functions: Work with administrators and staff at each school site to coordinate lesson and performance schedules.
Evaluate each pupil's development in the course(s) being taught and prepare necessary reports.
Maintain professional competence through participation in professional learning education and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands: Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter and observing students.
Ability to hear and understand speech at normal speech levels.
Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Ability to carry up to 25 pounds.
Moderate to high stress levels.
Work is predominantly in school environment.
Climate is normal; occasional adverse weather conditions.
Regular contact with students, teachers, school staff, district staff, parents and community members.
Desired Qualifications: Experience in marching band drill writing and performance.
Bilingual a plus.
Required Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Single Subject credential with authorization to teach Music and a Bilingual Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD or BCLAD) credential, or equivalent. Authorization to teach additional subject areas preferred.
If not fully credentialed, candidate must be willing to enroll in credential program and have at least 18 semester units in the subject area to qualify for a short term staff permit; or must be enrolled in a credential program and be eligible for an internship credential.
Fluent and literate in English and Spanish highly desirable.
