IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Support Services
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EMPLOYMENT TERM : Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by KCSBOE
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Support in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and KCS G48A.
JOB SUMMARY: Provide appropriate grade level standards-based instruction to students of all age levels placed on medical and behavioral homebound instruction.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :
Devise, with cooperating home school teachers and counselors, an instructional program for each student assigned to him/her.
Collaborate with the Office of Exceptional Student a weekly schedule ensuring four hours a week of in-person instruction in the content areas of English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and other agencies associated with the school.
Plan and implement sequential learning experiences for students using a variety of instructional strategies, consistent with the district's philosophy, mission statement, instructional goals, school level objectives, and the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards. The learning experiences shall follow and use approved curricula and instructional materials.
Plan and implement instruction in the four core content areas (English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies).
Engage the learners in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the assigned group of pupils, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
Maintain records and provide evidence of growth and progress to parents, student's home school and the Office of Exceptional Students.
Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive climate that encourages student participation, using positive motivation, and clear classroom routines.
Ensure the safety and health of all students, notifying the administration of any unsafe conditions, following established procedures.
Establish a professional rapport with students and parents that earns their respect.
Assist with the preparation, monitoring, and following of Individualized Education Plans for selected students assigned
Employ a variety of methods for students to demonstrate learning and accomplishments. Evaluate and grade homework, assignments, and tests in a timely fashion, providing feedback to the student on performance.
Attend required KCS staff meetings
Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences.
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties.
Meet with each student as required to provide instruction.
Work closely with student's parents and family for an understanding and solution of the student's problems and schedule.
Maintain and submit complete reports for the Office of Exceptional Students.
Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the child in school.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of teaching home bound students, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning and students needing to learn at home.
QUALIFICATIONS : Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specializations and grade levels, pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-2; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a.
Valid driver's license with no serious violations and reliable means of transportation
Have at least five (5) years excellent experience in teaching and working with children.
Experience teaching students assigned to homebound instruction preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
