Job Description Uncommon High School Social Studies teachers collaborate in department teams to guide students towards becoming self-directed learners. Our educators are knowledgeable in their course content and passionate about motivating and inspiring high school students. History classes aim to empower student voices and develop them into informed global citizens, emphasizing textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. By the end of high school, students will be equipped for academic autonomy and college preparatory work. Responsibilities 1. Instruction Teach a curriculum focused on the analysis of World History, US History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework. Facilitate student-led discussions on historical topics where learners engage with open-ended questions, participate in peer debates, and synthesize arguments. Guide students to critically analyze authors' claims and the importance of sourcing while developing skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analyses. Create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to express evidence-based viewpoints. Collaborate with the History department to set academic and engagement goals for students. 2. Data Analysis Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments, ensuring a responsive teaching approach. Implement strategies that differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom. 3. School Culture Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, valued, and heard. Partner with students' families to provide appropriate resources for supporting their child's learning needs. Participate in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions. Engage in weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement. Collaborate with grade-level teams to develop academic goals and instructional strategies. Qualifications A demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social, emotional, and academic development. Enthusiasm for collaboration with internal and external partners to benefit students. A self-directed learner who actively seeks and applies feedback for improvement. Required Experience: An interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years of experience preferred). Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities. Must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before employment. Certification is not required at hire, but meeting New York state certification eligibility is necessary, which includes enrolling in a teacher preparation program and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher during employment if lacking an education degree. Our compensation philosophy values equity, fairness, and the attraction and retention of top talent. Compensation Compensation for this role ranges from $50,000 to $64,700. Starting pay is determined based on various factors, including relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $50,000.
