About This Position:
Under the direction of the Director of Education and Student Services, the Art Teacher plans and provides engaging, developmentally appropriate art experiences for students with a wide range of learning, behavioral, and emotional disabilities. The role involves evaluating and assessing student progress aligned with their Individualized Education Program (IEP), creating a flexible and inclusive learning environment that fosters creativity, self-expression, and skill development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and conduct activities that introduce students to a variety of art forms including hand building, pottery, ceramics & slip casting, mosaics, textile & fiber arts, origami, papermaking, candle making, stained glass, sculpture, painting, and drawing.
- Develop a balanced program of instruction, demonstrations, and work time that encourages observation, questioning, and investigation across multiple artistic disciplines.
- Use differentiated and integrated assessment strategies to support diverse learning needs and monitor student progress in various art techniques and projects.
- Establish and support guidelines for behavior and procedures that maintain a positive, respectful, and creative classroom environment.
- Employ classroom structures and consistency aligned with the school’s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support Plans (PBIS), fostering responsibility and cooperation among students.
- Incorporate technology and art-specific tools to enhance instruction, including digital portfolios, design software, and virtual galleries.
- Collaborate with administrators, social workers, and other professionals to implement IEPs that promote students’ educational, physical, and social/emotional development through art-based activities.
- Facilitate projects that integrate basic design principles with various mediums, such as combining painting and drawing techniques or incorporating mosaics into sculpture projects.
- Provide opportunities for students to explore mixed media by combining textile arts with painting, or incorporating stained glass techniques with sculpture.
- Support students in developing skills in origami, papermaking, candle making, and stained glass as part of a comprehensive arts curriculum designed to foster fine motor skills, creativity, and cultural appreciation.
- Assist in developing transition plans that include portfolios or projects showcasing students’ work in diverse media to support future educational or vocational opportunities.
- Serve as an active member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, promoting the integration of arts into overall student development.
Minimal Requirements:
- Bachelor degree in Art Education or similar field - Required
- Connecticut State Department of Education certification or willingness to pursue (#042) - Required
- Experience with teaching students in special education programs
- Ability to develop a positive classroom culture/environment based on diverse student needs

Hours and Rate of Pay:
- 35 hours per week
- Monday-Friday between 7:30am-2:30pm
- Salary range between $50,000-$64,000 based on qualifications, education, certifications and experience.
