Purpose of Job:
To give instruction to the students in the areas assigned by the Board, Director of Schools, and Principal.
Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.
General Responsibilities/Essential Functions :
Provide full, willing and helpful cooperation in carrying out all reasonable instructions or extra assignments which are given by the principal before, during and after the school day
Provide instruction to the students in the areas assigned by the Board, Director of Schools, and Principal
Teach listening, speaking, reading and writing through core content instruction based on the Tennessee Academic Standards for Language Arts
Provide learning structure in which the output areas of language, speaking and writing, are practiced by students on a daily basis
Administer tests and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student language ability
Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving classroom objectives
Instruct English Learner students for the purpose of improving their success in academics and skills
Model English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language
Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g. PIT, IEP, data meetings) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and to optimize learning
Be respectful of cultural differences
Update and maintain a variety of written or online documents for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements
Foster parent involvement in the schools and the community
Record accurately the number of students present and absent each day in the manner prescribed by the Board, Director of Schools, and Principal
Follow the Tennessee curriculum standards and local course of study, to follow rules and regulations of the state and policies of the local Board, and to follow administrative procedures at the school and system level
Maintain positive relationships with the home, parent(s) and the community
Keep parent(s) duly informed of the child's progress (through a variety of methods) and hold conference with parents and appropriate others as necessary
Responsible for reporting any reasonable suspicions related to a child's health or welfare as a result of abuse or neglect to the appropriate state/community agency, as well as the principal/program director
Abide by the Tennessee Teacher Code of Ethics
Participate in appropriate and required staff development sessions at the school and/or system level
Ensure that the use of the district's resources (time, money, people) are used in the most strategic and effective way possible
Follow the appropriate complaint/grievance process: report concern to the principal first, next to the Complaint Officer for the system, the Director of Schools, and finally to the Board
Report all accidents/injuries on the required form to the principal in a timely manner
Properly supervise students
Keep a current class record and submit it to the principal upon request and at the end of the year
Keep a complete cumulate record on each child
Maintain a clean, orderly, safe classroom
Administer appropriate assessments, record scores on cumulate records, interpret test scores as needed, and analyze assessment data in an effort to improve instruction and student learning
Plan, prepare, implement, assess instructional lessons that teach the standards and are appropriate for individual student needs
Maintain proper classroom and school order that supports student learning
Other Duties and Responsibilities Project a positive image of the LSSD at all times and support district goals
Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of district information
Support the effective delivery of a high quality of education for all students
Provide exceptional levels of professional support and service to staff and public
May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities
Successful completion of Criminal Justice fingerprint/background process and drug screen
Appropriate attendance record
Dress neatly and appropriately, according to system staff dress code
Provide thirty days notice of resignation so that an appropriate replacement may be found

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. All teachers shall be licensed in accordance with state law and the regulations of the Tennessee Department of Education. Such license shall be on file in the Director of School's Office prior to beginning employment
It is the responsibility of the employee to secure a certificate and to maintain its validity. When a teacher's contract must be terminated because the teachers' certificate has lapsed or otherwise becomes invalid, the Director of School shall immediately suspend the teacher without pay pending disposition of the matter. The teacher shall be notified of the reason for the suspension and given an opportunity for a hearing before the Board
All teachers shall demonstrate competency based on the current job assignment and performance standards as outlined in the appropriate state model for local evaluation
Fluent in the instruction of the following four areas of the English language: listening, speaking, reading and writing
Possess knowledge of Second Language Acquisition theories
Possess knowledge of BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency)
Knowledgeable of cultural differences and their impact on student learning
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal, Program Director or Director of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable
