Position Summary
We're hiring a part-time English teacher to lead two live classes for homeschool students:
English - Middle School Writing (IEW)
High School Literature & Writing (A-G)
In students will develop essential writing skills through a step-by-step approach using proven techniques from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). In the first semester, students will focus on mastering various poetry and paragraph styles including:
Process paragraphs
Informative paragraphs
Persuasive paragraphs
Narrative paragraphs
Compare and contrast paragraphs
Descriptive paragraphs
Second semester students will build upon their paragraph-writing skills to compose longer and more structured pieces:
Three-paragraph essays and personal narratives
Five-paragraph research reports
Additionally, students will strengthen their grammar skills by reviewing the eight parts of speech and punctuation rules essential for clear and effective sentence structure.
The class focuses on reading classic literature, developing strong writing skills, and building students' confidence in research, analysis, and communication. Students will participate in thoughtful discussions and respond to literature through a variety of writing assignments.
What You'll Teach
Classic works like "Romeo and Juliet", "Frankenstein", "Night", "1984", "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "Fahrenheit 451".
Writing genres:
Argumentative and analytical essays
Research reports
Persuasive speeches
Creative writing (poetry, narratives, short stories)
Compare/contrast and character analysis
Vocabulary, grammar, and rhetorical analysis
Research and citation (MLA format)
Responsibilities
Teach two live, in-person English classes per week
Use IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Structure & Style methods in middle school instruction
Guide students through the full writing process
Lead thoughtful class discussions on literature and writing
Assign and grade writing tasks and reading comprehension assessments
Communicate regularly with students and families
Support homeschooled learners with differentiated instruction
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field
2+ years teaching experience
Experience using IEW Structure & Style methods
Strong knowledge of literature and writing instruction
Preferred:
Experience teaching homeschool students
Familiarity with UC A-G approved curriculum
CA Single Subject Teaching Credential (or in progress)
