Nevada City School of the Arts (NCSOTA), a TK-8 charter school in operation since 1994, is seeking a dynamic, culturally aware, stimulating and qualified Elective Teacher to join our team.


JOB TITLE: ELECTIVE TEACHER - BEGINNING GUITAR
SCHEDULE: 2025/26 School Year - Part-time 4 hrs/wk
WAGE: $30-$40 per hour, depending on experience


SUMMARY: The Nevada City School of the Arts is seeking a passionate and enthusiastic Beginning Guitar Teacher to join our music department. This position will involve teaching middle school students the fundamentals of guitar in a supportive and engaging classroom environment. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching beginners, a love for music, and the ability to foster a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere. Our music program encourages students to explore their musical talents while developing important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and creativity.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach Beginning Guitar Classes: Lead classes of up to 15 middle school students, introducing them to the basics of playing guitar, including proper technique, chord progressions, simple songs, and reading music.
  • Lesson Planning: Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that cater to a variety of learning styles, ensuring that all students are able to progress at their own pace.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a positive and respectful classroom environment where all students feel comfortable and motivated to learn.
  • Assess Student Progress: Monitor and assess students' progress throughout the course, providing constructive feedback and offering additional support to students as needed.
  • Individualized Instruction: Offer one-on-one guidance to students who may need extra help with specific skills or concepts.
  • Collaborate with the Music Department: Work closely with other music educators and guitar teachers to align on curriculum, share resources, and support school-wide musical initiatives and performances.
  • Encourage Musical Growth: Foster a love of music and guitar-playing, inspiring students to continue developing their musical talents beyond the classroom.
  • Abide by all personnel policies and procedures adopted by NCSOTA and the At-Will Agreement
  • Adheres to the School Compact in interpersonal relationships with students, families and staff
  • Other duties as assigned


WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

  • Indoor/outdoor work environment
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work

Physical Demands (with or without reasonable accommodations):

  • Occasional lifting and carrying (maximum 50 lbs.) Infrequent pushing and pulling
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE

  • Education: Real-world like experience playing guitar and teaching.
  • Experience: Previous experience teaching guitar in a group setting and working with middle school students is highly preferred.
  • Experience teaching beginner-level guitar is a plus.
  • Skills: Strong proficiency in guitar playing (acoustic and electric) and knowledge of basic music theory.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain musical concepts clearly and engage students in a positive and encouraging manner.
  • Classroom Management: Ability to create and maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Passion for Teaching: A genuine enthusiasm for working with young students and fostering their love of music.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2 years working with children, preferably in a school setting
  • Conflict resolution training a plus

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to commit to the full academic year: August through early June.
  • Willingness to incorporate diverse music genres and teaching methods to accommodate various student interests and learning styles.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: These requirements must be met prior to beginning employment and will be requested upon job offer acceptance.

  • Fingerprint and Background clearance
  • Valid Tuberculosis clearance and every four years thereafter
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within 45 days of employment and every two years thereafter
  • Completion of mandatory training (video & in-person) within 6 weeks of employment and every year thereafter.
