First STEP Preschool Teacher POSITION DESCRIPTION:
ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation is seeking a part-time Early Childhood Special Education Teacher for the ASK First STEP ( S ocialization T hrough E nriched P lay) preschool classroom at First Baptist Preschool.
This position is a co-lead teacher with a First Baptist Preschool teacher.
First STEP is a combined three- and four-year-old class specifically for cancer patients, survivors, and siblings.
Two-thirds of childhood cancer patients and survivors experience physical, cognitive, and/or social-emotional late effects from treatment.
The First STEP program helps support these unique challenges in the classroom.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Early Childhood Special Education Teacher reports to the ASK Program Manager and works closely with a First Baptist Preschool co-teacher and Director.
Maintain a nurturing environment in which the child may grow physically, emotionally, mentally academically and socially.
Plan & execute activities and lessons that incorporate the Virginia Early Learning & Development Standards and Virginia Foundation Blocks for Early Learning.
Communicate lessons, activity highlights, reminders, and photos to parents.
Become well acquainted with each child, aware of his/her needs, and knowledgeable of his/her family background and home environment.
Determine priorities for student individualized educational needs to prepare for pre-K or kindergarten readiness.
Initiate contact and respond to parents regarding the progress of each child through conferences, telephone calls, and emails.
Clean classroom, equipment, and toys according to standards provided.
Attend classes, workshops, and other training opportunities for professional growth (Ten hours per school year are required.) Secure and provide lesson plans for substitutes.
To be successful in this role, our Early Childhood Special Education Teacher will have:
Knowledge of early childhood special education theory and practice.
Ability to be organized and self-motivated while working in a team.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of families.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
Career Experience includes:
Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field.
Classroom experience with special educational needs children.
