THE POSITION
Below is a summary of the basic function of the position and scope of responsibilities. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide supervision, care and learning activities to preschool-age children in a classroom environment; develop and implement a variety of lesson plans, instructional materials and activities to meet the needs and interests of children; monitor, assess and report progress of children.
THE CANDIDATE
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
As required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, requires a total of 40 college semester units (24 units Early Childhood Education/Child Development including core courses and 16 general education units) and six months experience working with children in a classroom or similar learning environment.
An Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or related field with 3 units supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting is highly desirable.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Child Development Teacher Permit issued by the State of California.
- Applicants are required to have completed 12 units of the 4 main classes required by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division to be left alone with children.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certifications issued by an authorized agency; employees must fulfill certification requirements within the first three (3) months of the probationary period.
- Some incumbents in this classification may be required to speak, read and write in a designated second language.
THE DETAILS
TESTING INFORMATION:
The examination process may be comprised of multiple choice exam, performance assessment, computer skills exam, or any combination of assessment appropriate to determine technical ability to perform the duties listed in the
Step 1: Application Screening (pass/fail) Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications.
Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department, so it is essential that applicants provide as much detail as possible and answer all parts of the application, including work experience and the supplemental questionnaire. If there is a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to further examinations.
Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications for the position will be emailed instructions to schedule their examination. Instructions to schedule the examination will not be sent until after the closing date for the position. A photo ID is required for admittance to the exam.
Step 2: Qualification Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%) date to be determined.
All applicants must achieve a passing score in each part of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list.
ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION:
New Hires - Initial Salary Placement
The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District. Upon approval of the Director of Classified Human Resources, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement up to Step 5 based on the following criteria:
- Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of experience related to the classification)
- Additional education at the college level beyond the educational requirements established for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of education related to the position)
All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period.
Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District: an additional 1.20% of base salary after completing 4 years of service, 4.10% at 9 years, 7.08% at 14 years, 10.15% at 19 years, 13.31% at 24 years, 16.46% at 29 years.
Promotional and/or transfer candidates will be placed at the appropriate step in accordance with established Personnel Commission Rules & Regulations.
Education Incentives
All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a college degree which is above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications for their classification.
AA/AS = 2.50%
BA/BS = 4.00%
MA/MS = 5.00%
Ed.D./Ph.D/JD = 6.00%

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (Upon Offer of Employment)
- Employment Verification: The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires that the District obtain documentation from every individual who is employed which verifies identity and authorizes his/her right to work in the United States.
- Individuals selected for employment are required to submit to a tuberculosis risk assessment, and, if risk factors are identified, would then be required to submit to a tuberculosis examination to determine freedom from tuberculosis.
- The District reserves the right to require a job related physical examination and satisfactory results from such an exam.
- Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information, and from employing a person who has been convicted of a violent or serious felony, as defined.
- All candidates with a conviction record for offenses other than minor traffic violations, must file a conviction record statement with their application. Such a conviction, or failure to report a record of convictions, may bar you from employment.
- Other: Eligibles will be required to provide a current DMV report and/or proof of auto insurance to the Classified Human Resources Department before being certified for a final selection interview for positions that require the employee to drive a district vehicle and/or hold a valid California driver's license.

VACATION
Vacation is earned based on assigned hours. (For example: a new employee working 8 hours/day, 12-months per year will earn one vacation day per month, up to a total of twelve (12) days of vacation per
year. Employees who work less than 12-months per year or less than 8 hours/day shall be entitled to a prorated share of vacation benefits as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.) Vacation earned increases with years of service with the district.
SICK LEAVE
The district provides for 1 day of illness leave per month worked, with unlimited accumulation for unused days.
