Job Summary:
Berlin Public Schools is looking for a dynamic special education teacher to work in our BLAST program. Our BLAST program services students on the autism spectrum as well as students with intellectual disabilities and other cognitive impairments. The successful candidate will get to work with a dynamic team of paraprofessionals, RBTs and related service providers including AT specialists. Student programming is individualized to meet the student's academic needs and to promote independence in daily living activities. This program is highly supported with one to one paraprofessionals and is made up of a caseload of six to seven students. In addition, the special education teacher works closely with the BCBA, BCaBA and RBT to develop and implement individualized programs for each student. Collaboration also takes place with our two other BLAST teachers. All three classrooms have the opportunity to plan community based activities for our students in order to work on generalization of skills.
General Statement of Duties:
Uphold administrative regulations, school rules, policies as determined by the state and local boards of education and negotiated agreements.
To diagnose, evaluate, and develop an educational plan for students assigned to the learning disability class.
To implement Individual Education Programs for students in the class.
To interpret the needs of students in the program to other school staff and parents.
To evaluate student progress and report to other school staff and parents.
To maintain and update cumulative and confidential files of students in the program.
To maintain a daily and weekly schedule of class plans and activities.
To function as a member of the Planning and Placement Team in: diagnosing, evaluating, and recommending educational programming for referred pupils.
Reviewing pupils already assigned to the special education class.
To provide consultation to classroom teachers in working with children with disabilities.
To provide progress reports and other information regarding their programs to the Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
To assist in development of program needs analysis, objectives, activities and evaluation for the special education program.
To participate in department meetings and activities.
To participate in community and professional activities relating to special education.
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
Qualifications: Connecticut Special Education Teacher Certification required (165, 065 or 265).
Experience with students with diverse learning needs. Experience in Autism and cognitive impairments as well as discrete trial programming.
Must have strong collaboration and communication skills.
Strong assessment and report writing skills.
Strong understanding of students with disabilities in all areas.
Experience with writing and implementing IEP goals and objectives and participating in PPT's.
Terms of Employment:
Full time teaching assignment to begin at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the Berlin Board of Education and the Berlin Education Association, BA Step 1 $53,201 - Ph.D. Max $111,279.
