Compensation: $38,000-$44,000/annually
Job Summary: The Physical Education Teacher at the elementary school (K-5) level is responsible for planning and implementing physical education activities, monitoring students, and evaluating student progress. Physical Education in elementary school generally emphasizes sports-related skills, movement patterns, games, and fitness activities. The Physical Education Teacher records and maintains student information. He or she is responsible for communicating with all parties involved in the education of the student.
Essential Job Functions:
Prepares and sets up the gym before the first day of school
Sets up equipment before class
Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students
Prepares and implements lessons plans, providing for appropriate learning experiences for each student
Establishes and enforces rules of conduct; supervises students in the gymnasium, playground, outside on the blacktop, or athletic fields
Demonstrates skills being taught; assists students in performing skills
Teaches safety rules related to each activity
Assesses fitness levels; performs fitness testing
With the guidance of the director, researches and orders physical education and recess equipment
Plans, organizes, and coordinates field day; develops activities; sets up for activities
Monitors and evaluates student skill levels and outcomes
Prepares information sheets for participation in parent-teacher conferences
Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and the community
Attends planning meetings, team meetings, staff meetings, PD meetings, and other meetings of groups according to membership in those groups
Monitors use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities
Works traffic duty, recess duty, and lunch duty
Prepares lesson plans and materials for substitute teachers; includes class lists, and any special instructions related to students’ special needs
Working knowledge of emergency plans for the school, such as lockdown procedures
Participates in fire drills, as required

Job Environment:
Requires some heavy lifting
Requires some teaching time outdoors
Exposure to weather conditions when teaching outside of the school building
May be exposed to humidity, wind, and pollen when teaching outside
Most of the usual workday is spent standing or walking on blacktop, cement, and turf surfaces outside or wooden gymnasium floor
Experience/Knowledge:
Knowledge of subject area
Experience working with elementary-aged students
Understanding of differences in ability and differences in learning styles
Ability to use logic and reasoning to appropriately handle problems that arise
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to students, parents, and staff members
Ability to effectively manage the classroom
Ability to maintain a positive attitude and calm manner
Ability to remain flexible with changes in routine or plans
Knowledge of computers and software programs
