SUMMARY
The First Grade Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, supportive, and engaging classroom environment that fosters academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and a love of learning in first-grade students. The teacher will plan, deliver, and assess instruction in alignment with state standards, district curriculum, and best practices for early childhood education.
The position reports to the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Planning & Delivery Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with state standards and district curriculum. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, strengths, and interests of all students. Integrate technology, hands-on learning, and real-world connections into daily instruction.
Classroom Management Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and safe classroom environment. Implement consistent routines, expectations, and behavior management strategies that support a positive learning climate.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments. Maintain accurate and timely records of student progress and communicate regularly with parents/guardians. Use data to guide instructional decisions and provide targeted interventions as needed.
Collaboration & Professionalism Collaborate with grade-level teams, support staff, and specialists to enhance student learning. Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and participate in school events. Maintain professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues, upholding district policies and ethical standards.
Student Support Foster students' social-emotional growth by teaching skills such as empathy, self-regulation, and teamwork. Support students with varying academic and behavioral needs, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
Qualifications Education & Certification: Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or related field required. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Elementary Education endorsement.
Experience: Experience teaching in an elementary school setting preferred. Knowledge of early literacy, numeracy, and child development best practices.
Skills & Abilities: Strong classroom management and organizational skills. Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning tools.
Work Environment Standard school classroom environment. May require occasional evening or weekend work for school events or parent meetings. Compensation The compensation is outlined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Richmond Education Association (REA).
